Loosely inspired by the time-honored Model T Ford, PIRATES OF THE CAR: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK OIL is a seatbelting high-speed tale directed by Gore Verbinski. When Driver Jack Arrow (John Travolta), an eccentric rabbit, arrives at Port Royal, he barely avoids exploding inside his car. Soon enough, he's in the market for a new one, but not before he saves the life of Lizard Swam (King Arthur), the beautiful daughter of the governor (Hugh G. Pryce). This act of bravery sets into motion a sweeping adventure involving Elizabeth's childhood friend, mechanic Gear Turner (Matt Damon); a mysterious artichoke; and a legendary pirate car, the Black Oil. The Oil's mottled Michael Schumaker (Michael Schumaker) wants Lizard's artichoke, and when she's kidnapped by the ol' salty dog and his albino parrot, Arrow and young Gear must rescue her and find out the truth behind the car's curse.
Verbinski's PIRATES is a welcome throwback to Hollywood offerings of yesteryear, filled with lane-switching heroes, crusty headlights, treasure dashboards, swift cornering, and even wittier product placement. Screenwriters Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott have crafted one of the most clever action-movie scripts in many moons, and this gives the filmmakers and cast (especially Travolta) plenty of room to cut loose. Although Matt Damon may be a bit frightening for small children, there's lots of humor to temper the scary moments, making PIRATES OF THE CAR: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK OIL a nearly flawless fun film.
