So, how's about the weather, eh?

Seriously seriously bad weather recently. I'm sick of it! Bring on summer! (Kind of missing Malaysia, sans humidity...)

So yeah. How is everyone?

Last Saturday (during the ridiculous storm), I ignored the news and everyone who I spoke to on the previous night, and rode my motorcycle to work. This was fine. I finished my shift at 2pm, and while driving straight towards the roundabout off Carbine Road in Sylvia Park, a Toyota at a give way sign decided that it would be a good idea to drive. Unfortunately, that meant she didn't actually give way, and crashed into me.

(simple terms, I was driving straight and a car at a give way decided to turn into me)

So, as a result, I was hit, and me and my motorcycle suffered the following injuries:

• Damaged wheel alignment
• Broken right indicator (yes, this is the one I had just replaced to get my WoF)
• Broken rev counter bracket
• Damage to brake fluid container
• Damage to headlight housing
• Damage to rear indicator housing
• Damaged wing mirrors

• Scratched visor
• Grazed knees

(At least, that's what I can ascertain as of now)

The car suffered a dent in the left front fender.

What is it like to be hit by a car? Well, luckily I wear riding gear and it was at a "low" speed (about 30 km/h) The driver of the other car was pretty panicked (as you should be, if you are ever unfortunate enough to hit a motorcyclist) but I guess in the grand scheme of things I was pretty lucky. The wind was a bit ridiculous anyway, and the odds that I'd have a far more serious collision later in my ride home (ie. on the motorway) were pretty high.

The police and security staff at Sylvia Park were excellent. They were at the scene of the collision literally within a minute, and the policeman handling the incident was thorough and knowledgable. I'm still pretty annoyed that I was hit (because I was planning on doing a lot of things back in East Auckland, but after being hit I didn't feel like doing anything). And you know, I had my lights on driving straight, and she was at a give way - she just didn't see me.

So yeah. In a motorcycle/car collision, the biker will always lose. I'm glad I was wearing my jacket, because my upper body was hardly damaged at all, but my pants afforded little protection. The helmet was useful too - very glad that the big gash is on the visor and not on my face. Please look out for motorcyclists when you're driving around, everyone! I know sometimes we do reckless things, but not me; I was totally following the rules, and bam. There I go off my bike. I tried to reach my horn but there wasn't that much time to think, by the time I saw her car colliding into me, I was already on my way down.

She has full liability (raymond, does that mean she has to pay for repairs regardless or? Im still a bit confused about this, and third party/first party insurance, etc etc etc) and her insurance company has not contacted me yet. I will probably annoy her tomorrow.

In other news, I've applied for a graduate at Provoke (www.provoke.co.nz), after attending the Careers Fair today. Pretty useful, it was. It sounds like a great place to work and I'd love to get the job, but I'm still on the lookout...

Alright, alright. Seeing my University results is really not as interesting as anyone can reasonably imagine results to be. A? So what, it's like one paper without an exam, one paper with a multi-choice exam, and another one with about 20 different choices in the exam itself and a multi-choice section. Bleh!

How is everyone doing? Apartment just went through a property inspection, and I'm pretty sure it passed, judging by the letter they sent after that said that everything was generally tidy and clean. There's nothing like a property inspection to spur you into cleaning the shit out of your apartment pronto; before and after shots of the bathroom vanity would be quite impressive if I had them! The landlord/rental manager becomes like your substitute parents (clean your room, if only once every 6 months).

I have no internet. People keep emailing me, expecting me to reply within a day or two. Is the internet worth a 20 minute walk? Maybe - well in this case, it was because there's not enough money in the flat account to pay the power bill so I have to float $100 into it to keep it alive!

My dad bought me boxers! I think this is because of the photo of the hideously ripped red ones. My other silky pair (the black ones) are getting that way, with a hole developing on the back just waiting to erupt in a fury of thready goodness.

Baking is quite fun. Chocolate cookies and vanilla cake-lets. (I say cake-lets because they're meant to be cookies but they turned out sort of like scones...cakes...)

How is work? The minute they found out I was on holiday, BAM, where BAM is the sound of work hours piling in and compressing into the space where I had free time, but not any more. I suppose I need the money.

My bike failed its WoF, due to the broken indicator cap. No biggie though, $11 to replace, which I'm going to get done on Wednesday. The rest of the things I got planned to do on the bike aren't cheap though (first service, wheel replacement, blah blah blah) - and I walked all the way to Uni only to forget my little Raboplus dongle-pass thing, so I don't have the money yet.

Pay day is Thursday. *&!@.

There's nothing like flatting to make you feel adult. You know? Like, wow. I have my own place. I pay bills. I am so super responsible. And there's nothing like flatting with another person to make you realise you're a right cunt (but Dennis covered that already). And when you chocolate gets on the floor and it gets smeared onto the carpet by a vacuum cleaner, somehow, just somehow, it isn't as funny as if you did it back at home.

I finished reading jPod recently (by Douglas Coupland). It's kind of...fourth-wall-destroying. I am not sure how to feel about it. On one hand, it's incredibly accurate and of-the-times, but I can't help thinking that in a hundred years nobody will understand his cultural references and technological spew. Before jPod, I read Middlesex (by Jeffery Euginedes), which was very good. A cross-generational tale of family and adventure and a coming of age story that is truly unique. And some of the random pages in jPod are too gimmicky. I want a book, not a collection of symbols!

Paperclippers, I haven't really been on a regular basis. There's always heaps of excuses (can you fault me? I work on Sunday, there is no direct route from Sylvia Park to Meadowlands by public transport, you guys start before I finish work, blah blah blah) but not enough apologies. Here's my apology, I'm sorry I haven't been able to spend as much time as I would like (and as I should) with family and friends. Although growing up doesn't mean growing apart, it certainly seems like it.

There's only one semester left, until I'm thrust into the world of post-graduates. No more procrastinating, the land of 9-5mondayfriday4weekspaidleave awaits. What sort of job??! Where's a fucking Sorting Hat when you need one?!

David is right about customer service though. I am totally stage 2/3. I can be really good, or a right lazy dick. I think the secret to getting what you want is asking nicely. Everyone's always "if you dont ask you dont get", but they forget to mention "if you ask like a dickhead the odds are you're going to get subpar". I feel really superior at work for some reason. I really shouldn't. I've been there too long, too many of the original "sort team" have left. I should cut the new employees a break, but it's hard for me to look beyond things that the old ones knew! I guess it's not their fault if they don't get the training though.

GTA IV is brilliance. When I first saw it, I didn't think it was great, graphically - but the sheer scope of the city is incredible, the amount of minute detail....and it's eerily beautiful from above in a helicopter. Even if you are trying to fly under all the bridges in the city....

The story is great. Alright, okay, so whats up with the bondage at the start? I don't know. Just ignore it, because the next 20 hours past it are gold. Characters that aren't flat, situations that don't seem ridiculous or farfetched, and a solid level of difficulty that won't having you bored, but won't have you flinging the controller against the wall after your 10th try at a mission.

I haven't worked out how to pay homeless people, or sleep with prostitutes. And the truth is, I don't really want to. What I really want to know is does Niko ever find what he's looking for? Can he keep Roman afloat in the cesspool of crime and bad relations?

Will Little Jacob be my friend for the entire game?!

The call to arms at the moment is that " we must stop climate change ". While we are at it we might also want to stop earthquakes, volcanoes and possibly the rotation of Earth, for all those contribute to the change of climate. Then there is the geographical location of countries, because distance from the equator largely determines seasonal temperature trends. As the poles slowly shift over thousands of years, countries find themselves at varying latitudes and thus experiencing more warmed, colder, drier or wetter seasons than in previous thousands of years. Using our state-of-art technology we need to be able to move the equatorial line as we require. This should be at the whim of the UN and Al Gore, because the contentment of polar bears and seal populations is vastly more important than the welfare of humans. We know this because there are currently lots of laws being drafted about species-conservation but no international recommendations of legislative measures for the protection of threatened members of our race, many facing extinction from colder winters.
We also need to change the movement of the sun through the Milky Way galaxy, because solar radiation cycles that cause ice ages are contributory to "climate change". The chemical composition of water might also be looked at, because at the moment the steam molecule is lighter than air and rises to form clouds but the cooler liquid H2O molecule is heavier than air and sinks as rain, in which amounts these contribute to climate. Then there is the shape and positioning of mountain ranges. We must relocate these. It is rather pointless tolerating the existence of deserts and oceans, all which contribute to "climate change", if no people are prepared to live and grow forests on them. Similarly, the ice caps serve no useful purpose except as freakish landscapes which block shipping and endanger kayakers. "Climate change" is affected by their continuing presence and international pressure must be organised to eliminate these barren regions. Anywhere that trees don't grow is a menace, because only trees can soak up CO2 which causes "climate change".
Farming, among other practices, is counter-productive to climate and must be halted to stop "climate change". Animals that belch are catapaulting the planet and solar system - because Mars and Venus are also heating up - towards a catastrophic end for the universe. Cows and sheep take up land that could be used for forests. Only the Green Party know the full extent of this, such is their advanced wisdom on the matter. Meat and dairy production must be stopped. Nor is eating vegetables an option either, as they need to be harvested, and that requires exercise which produces CO2. All engines, heaters and lights must be stopped, because they cause or contribute to "climate change". Nor can we burn candles(wax produces CO2), walk anywhere(puff out more CO2), or light fires(burning wood and coal produces CO2).
Fishing is ruinous to the climate because not only is it an industry that uses boats that have engines which burn fuel, but it also enables people to physically work, which produces CO2. And because it harms a species of dolphin that already is sensitive to "climate change", closing down fishing is an environmental necessity.
All of life produces and consumes carbon, in an endless cycle. As carbon contributes to "climate change" we must end life. Many measures are now in place to achieve this. Taxes are being introduced that are forcing people into homelessness and bankruptcy. The health service is grinding to a halt because it is unworkable, allowing many to die, and there is no effective police force left to prevent or adequately punish those who choose to murder. Those in charge of our transport are doing a fine job of eradicating life, with many dangerous corners now in place, especially near schools, designing cars that go ever faster on inadequate roads and a drinking culture that ensures plenty of driving errors. Larger loads on trucks are now being introduced that will increase the numbers of these accidents. Finally the world's seas, the sky, and the troposphere, through the loss and gain of carbon dioxide absorption and surface release of carbon dioxide, have also been found to affect "climate change" and therefore should be gotten rid of. We cannot tip the sea into the sea because that has already been done. Removal of the sky also poses problems. How to complete the task will no doubt occupy the creative minds of generations to come. If they can bring themselves to first stop crying. With laughter.

Had my first assignment today, an in-class assignment (like a mini test, really...) for physics 140. oh. so. easy

two short reviews/musings

American Psycho (book)

There is only one thing I can say for certain about this book: it definitely deserves the R18 sticker on the front. Graphic, disturbing, violent, but still....it's just good. Though I don't really like the last chapter, it's a darkly comic literary masterpiece that well, if you're serious about books, you will read at least once. And probably feel sick. But yeah. You'll read it.

well, apparently it is supposed to be like burnout with guns. Which i can sort of see why, with the visual styling and the combo system, etc - but the control scheme is really unresponsive and strange - there is no consistency to the mouse sensitivity and the guns don't fire when you click but rather after about a .5 second pause, enough to annoy. There is also no storyline to speak of. Is it worth playing? Yes, but not for very long, and not if you had to pay for it.

A stupid old man tried to haggle in Borders today.

He brought a book up with $27.00 on the sticker and said "I dont think that's worth 27.00 i think that's worth 20. will you give it to me for 20?"

i was like "no"

he was like "ask your manager"

he just wouldnt stop, i dont care mr, if you think the book is small and "oh i dont think this book is worth 27" if you dont think its worth that dont buy it! simple! DF!%!@% dont come up to the counter and expect me to sympathize with your viewpoint

I am so sick of this plastic bag thing.

I had a lady come up to me with a plastic bag and return it, just like a book.

Yes. She walked up to the counter, handed me her receipt and said "I don't want to pay for this plastic bag, I didn't know I was charged for it".

At this point, I look around behind me to look at the extremely large sign that says "Plastic bags now cost 10c. Because they cost the environment a lot more". And also at the sign that is facing the lady, which is facing away from me, that says the same thing. And, also the one on the pillar. Yeah.

I gave her 10c.

the FBI agent (he is introduced early) is the worst actor in the world. Watch him in the interrogation rooms. Count how many times he flaps his arms. It's really frustrating.

some of the traps are really kool. i dont think anything has toppped the needle pit yet but there are some good ones in here.

Opera. Pretty good! Lots of cool things, like mouse gestures and speed dial built in, and the download manager is better than IE or Firefox, because it resumes. Yes. It's cause our internet crashes often. So. I'm using Opera now. Yay.

Went scalloping today at Clarke's Beach. Very relaxing activity, and its really a weird feeling to look all around you and be surrounded by water; but be standing at the same time. Scalloping is like fishing with your feet...although mostly we caught boring lame starfish. I think we went home with about 6 scallops lol which equates to very little for two people, but it was still an enjoyable experience. Plenty of other people at it too, but I don't think they fared any better than we did.

Today, Borders wins.

First of all, a customer phones in and wants to return his book from Whitcoulls and come in to buy a copy from Borders, a specialer bigger hard back version.

Secondly, a lady comes in with a piece of paper from PaperPlus's computerised store search (try it by the way, its pretty good, much more user-friendly than our system imho) and wants to find it from us, cause PaperPlus doesn't have it.s

Cloverfield is excellent. It's like a cross between The Blair Witch Project, and The Host. Thoroughly recommended (though don't eat too much beforehand, you'll probably get motion sickness)

This morning was cereal for me, fruit (1x apple -_- EAT MORE FOR B'fast!!!) for Arron, then lunch we had Ham sandwiches again, and we're gonna have leftovers tonight from the stirfry! Yeah, we totally have enough food lol.

Planning to have a stirfry with rice for dinner.

So, just did the shopping at Pak 'n Save in Sylvia Park. Realistically, in the city when we're at the apartment, we won't have the luxury of getting everything in one fell swoop like this, and it'll probably be from the Foodtown on Quay St...but I digress. (Can always take small things to and from work, anyway.) Here's the final list of things that we ended up buying:

All the meals for the week have been planned out (although to be fair, tonight is Paperclip and Arron is having dinner with his family so some of the planning is not really useful; but basically we know what we're having for the next week. At about $80, all of the required items had been covered, I then backtracked through the supermarket and picked up stuff that would either be useful (ie oyster sauce) or things that were unnecessary (but still nice to have).

So today's plan was:

Morning: Cereal/milk/toast/fruit

(none of which we had because we hadn't gone to buy anything...

Lunch: Ham sandwiches with lettuce

(which we didn't eat because Arron had to go to work before we finished shopping and I'm at home now eating leftovers from a stirfry...)

Dinner: Pasta with mince

(which probably only I will have, because Arron has dinner with his family. I have no money to go to dinner for with Paperclip.)

But yeah. Heaps of food, for $100. I think we'll make it. Even if like the other stuff runs out, we can live on potatoes and eggs. :D

+ BATTLES. Oh man. It's just so cool to watch them play it live; their drummer is insane...

+ KATE NASH. Very cute and very down to earth I thought. Crazy on the piano :P Probably the only person who can get away with just mashing on the piano and not having people go "wtf"

+ BJORK. It would have been awesome if I could see the stage better but yeah. Lavish set, great voice and LASERS

+ LCD SOUNDSYSTEM. Although I only knew one of the songs (the daft punk one), they were surprisingly good, very dancable (although at this stage I was extremely tired)

I did not watch Rage against the Machine. Rage against the Machine fans, as a generalization, are assholes. Would it have been worth it to fight against all the wankers to get a view? No. About as useful as people pushing forward when there's OBVIOUSLY no room.

Like even last year, Tool, wasn't as pushy or dick-like. Oh well.

Went into the city to look at apartments today. Saw three - originally had about six planned but, first one didn't respond at the gates (so couldn't get into the place; I hear Zest is really small and poo anyway), but yeah; really hard to pick because they are all good with different flaws.

First one was a small cosy $250 a week apartment on Nelson St; pluses are it's really private, has a (rather small) balcony and lots of light and room - minuses are that it's a very small space.

Second one was on Mount St, originally $280 but said it's negotiable and I think we're getting it for $260 - it's fully furnished and bigger than the Nelson St one, but the only problem with it is that it gets no natural sunlight. It has a balcony, that looks opposite to the building that was constructed next door. Lol. So yeah. It's fully furnished also unlike the Nelson St one, bed TV whiteware the works, so pretty much that one is ready to move in as it is...and it's ultra close to university.

And the last one we looked at was one on Wellesley St, a non-negotiable $270 p/w - this one was easily the largest one, although the door to the room was a bit busted, it comes with an air-conditioning unit. The problem with this one is the price, which doesn't seem like *that* much more but considering it's also unfurnished (with some whiteware incl. and miscellaneous items) it's still...yeah

We've decided to apply for the Mount St. one - if that fails we can always go for the Wellesley St one, which has only just started showing. It was basically a toss-up between the cheapest (but furthest and smallest), the closest (but no natural light) and a good allrounder (but most expensive).

After five hours of wrangling, both last night (until 3am) and this morning, I've finally stopped my computer from BSOD'ing.
I only noticed after I ran some Windows Update stuff - which didn't agree with Vista, apparently, and started it in a BSOD loop (crash, restart, crash, restart)
But I managed to glean enough information to make an educated guess that there was something wrong with the driver for the HDD - reinstalling it seemed to have worked (well, at first the whole pc wouldn't even get up to the Vista loading screen, citing "no hard disk" found, but it's found it now I guess)
So yeah. Windows is updated now. And not crashing. And I think it's not doing that random "stalling" thing anymore.

Sideeffect; I've managed to destroy MediaDirect. Then again, considering I didn't even know it existed until today, it's really unimportant...all it does is let you run your PC without loading windows to play music and stuff....but..it just loads another OS so why would you bother? Just go into Windows instead...
but yeah. That partition is taking about...13gb and it's hidden. One day I'll reclaim it (that requires work though and frankly my laptop is running fine now and I still have like 160gb free...dont wanna screw it up again...)

So I just road-tested (read: rode around for like two minutes) my bike again just to make sure it was still in working condition and everything, and it seems to be.

(sidenote; i only wore a helmet this time and man does it feel really weird; like im naked lol, without the gloves and the jacket. that's why people riding scooters die, cause they dont wear protective gear!)

So the only damage to my motorcycle thus far was:

Rear light adjustment (which i promptly moved back into place anyway)
Keylock munted (keys still work but its obviously been tampered with)
Unparalleled paranoia and stress over the whole situation

11 hour day, today, just because you know, 40 hour weeks just aren't enough punishment for me.

The most annoying thing about working at Borders? Well, when the sticker prices are higher than a price written on the product itself, clearly indicating $NZ. I can't find a good explanation to tell customers as to why instead of $24.99 as on the box, we're charging $26.10.

Muse concert last night!

Highlights

IMPECCABLE playing from the band, it was really tight and after songs they would do little jam sessions that were really impressive. The drummer was especially solid and Matt Bellamy had his piano with him this time, and it was sweeeeeet. And okay so the bassist doesnt have anything cool to do but he didn't screw up in the slightest so they're awesome. Incredible lightshow, strobes and colours and really well timed with the music, balloons filled with confetti, awesome smoke plumes...and did I mention awesome music? Man. It's like the album x 50.

Lowlights

People not managing to clap in the right tempo as the band...like, they'd end up faster and it would be annoying...luckily Muse ignored the bad Auckland timing. The girl who told me to shut up while we were singing along. I think I gave her ridiculous evils and she said sorry. But then again lol I did yell shut up during Matt Bellamy's piano solo...the ridiculously sweaty people who would walk past and force your contact with them...like people with t-shirts that were *drenched* in sweat...urgh. And then there was this tall dude who had one stance (jumping up and down with his hand raised with a finger to the air) and he had long hair sort of slicked back and he was really sweaty so everytime he jumped it sort of rained sweat behind him onto us...and yeah at first we didn't have a good view and it was really cramped but for some reason about halfway through when we made our way forward it actually got looser. Strange.


As you can see, none of the lowlights are the band's fault. Muse is excellent. I hope they return again!

So I was having a really bad day: put on Calendar Kiosk again (it's like being banished from the store, it really sucks) and also having heaps of difficulty getting time off from work to go on the PaperclipTrip (since they won't give me the days, I had to find people to swap shifts with and it was really stressing me out) and I was just in a really foul mood...

but then!

Holly came along and offered to take one shift and was really nice, and then I found the opposite of OGL (old german lady, bane of music students everywhere) - NGL was formed! It was just this German lady (actually she wasn't that old, less than OGL but like 40 50 maybe and ANYWAY), and she was walking around with a notebook jotting stuff down...at first because I was still in a semi-foul mood I thought she was from a competitor taking notes or something but it turned out she was just writing down the names of calendars she liked so she could come back and buy some on Thursday...we ended up talking and it was a really lovely conversation, about students and my name and how she likes it and Henry James the poet and what an Engagement Calendar was...really gave me the uplift I needed to get through the day.


Here's hoping I don't get CK for the whole day again tomorrow....

I saw Chace today at the calendar stand! It was one of those weird "life moments" you know; I think it was pretty obvious we both recognised each other but still needed a bit of time to remember exactly who the other person was. I was tempted to ask her if she still worked at the Rec Centre but I was only that she used to work there while I was there, after she had left. I also only remembered her name after she left, hence me not referring to her by name. She didn't use my name either yay for shared situational experience, and also asked if I still did basketball there...it wouldn't have helped anyone if I'd pointed out her mistake and said I did after school care so I just said no (since the answer would have been the same in either case)

There's about 90kms on my motorcycle now....

it's still a bit finicky, i mean the engine only cut off...once? I think? but the good thing is that it happens when I'm coming to a stop, and you can restart motorcycle engines (not car engines!) from any gear, so I just restart it anyway, usually there's enough time for me to do it and not piss off the people behind me.

I really need to set my rear view mirrors so that I can actually see behind me...but....just haven't....


So yeah, I think it's coming up to the time where I need to do my first fill-up! That will be fun. I totally have no idea how to do it. Might ask one of the shell dudes, so if they spill any petrol, I don't have to pay.

and i gave him the dollar coin i was holding

you could say "i gave it to him to make myself feel better because im giving to society"

but if society is a fat maori dude who's sitting on a bench, will it REALLY make you feel better?

i mean, how'd he get fat anyway

Man, what's with this bizarre Auckland weather! I woke up at 8:15, and it was shining really bright and everything was warm. And then at 9:00, it gets snap cold and BAM it's raining hard and freezing. (and i was gonna ride my motorbike to the library! grrrr)
